Clearing the path to a thriving online business

Just like any area of life you are hoping to build upon, you must start with a solid foundation, one that can support expansion. Any architect will tell you that you can’t start with the roof and work down. You must have a clear plan in place on which to build.

The same holds true for business, whether it’s offline or online. In order to be successful, you MUST begin with a solid foundation, which begins with a clear and specific understanding of your ultimate objective. You have to get clear on what it is that you are trying to accomplish. It does not matter if you’re just starting out or if you’re expanding your current business, clearing the path to a thriving online business requires specific steps.

A lack of clarity leads to mental fatigue. Rather than taking clear, focused action on items that will propel your business forward, you get caught up in ‘busy work’ that does very little to move you closer towards your goals. You become stuck on the hamster wheel frustration.

It’s much easier to take action when you are clear as to what you are doing and why you are doing it.

If the ultimate goal is to build a thriving business then you’ll need sales. Whether you provide services or products, you need clients. Which means you need prospects to share your information with. In the world of online, prospects are referred to as traffic. The way you get more traffic to your site or your offers is through targeted messaging.

Which means that the more time you spend getting clear on what your message is and who you are serving, the more targeted your traffic will be. Seems simple right? Yet this is the area where most people struggle.

clearing a path for success

It’s not surprising though when you think about the fact that we’ve been told what to do and when to do it most of our lives. We have boundaries and rules that begin as soon as we’re born; time to eat, time to play, and time to sleep. When we enter school, our days, weeks and months are already planned. We merely have to follow the plan (and study of course). As we enter the workforce, we may take a “job” in which we have specific duties we are to perform in order to get compensated.

Now if you’ve had a plan laid out for you since day one and all you’ve had to do is follow that plan, then chances are you will be successful at meeting those requirements. But as you step into the life of an entrepreneur, you’ll be the one defining the plan, and that can be tough.

Most of us start business for two reasons:

  1. We prefer to build our own dreams, on our own time.
  2. We have a service or product we believe the world needs.

Yet when we step out on our own, it’s like these great shackles have been lifted, our minds begins to race with a thousand ideas of what we could do. The imagination that has been compromised for years suddenly bursts forward and entertains seemingly hundreds of opportunities. And then Confusion sets in, followed by Indecision and its cousin, Inaction.

action required to clear the path for success

How do you simplify and clarify your intentions so you can take consistent, focused action?

Start by asking yourself the following questions:

  • What is your business?
  • What are you offering?
  • What is your primary objective?
  • Why are you in business?
  • What does your business day look like?
  • Are you working from home, or do you have an outside office?
  • Are you a solopreneuer?
  • Do you have a staff or virtual assistants?

Take time to answer those questions with as much detail as possible.
