Tired of friends wanting your business for free?

What to say to friends wanting FREE services

In this Q & A session I answer a question that seems to be a common problem for entrepreneurs.  Just what can you say to friends who want your business expertise for free?  It can be a bit tricky – you don’t want to ruin your friendship but at the same time, this is your business, your income!  I offer two suggestions that will allow you to help without feeling like you’ve been taken for granted!

How to handle friends who want your business for free:

.

It’s amazing how many entrepreneurs have this issue come up for them over and over again.   While we may enjoy giving a bit of free information, especially when it comes to something we love to do, and do best,  but it crosses the line when friends – or acquaintances (probably a better term)  are seeking not just advice but our services for free.

I’m a firm believer that if you don’t respect and value your own time, no one else will either.  So you have to establish boundaries especially when it comes to your expertise.  You wouldn’t ask your dentist friend to fix a cavity for free would you?  You may ask if she thinks you have a cavity but then you’d make an appointment.  You have every right to expect the same level of respect for you and your business.

If you’re willing to help make certain you set the boundaries.  Give a short block of time, and I mean SHORT and stick to it.  If there’s a chance this person could become a client, then offer a free consultation and always ask them the question, “Will that work for you?”  Doing so shows that you are willing to help but you are also being respectful of  your existing clients and your time.
