Discover Your Inner Strength: Overcoming Self-Doubt to Achieve Your Dreams
Why We Need a Push: Understanding Human Motivation
Have you ever found yourself daydreaming about a goal, only to be held back by endless overthinking? You're not alone. In this episode of the "Shift Or Get Off the Pot" podcast, I explore what it takes to move from contemplation to action. I discuss how self-doubt and lack of a strong motive inhibit us from achieving our dreams. Action builds confidence because it gives you the clarity that helps boost your belief that what you want is possible for you.
The Mighty Eagle: Why Even the Strongest Need a Push
Based on the book "Even Eagles Need a Push" by Dennis Whateley, sometimes even the mightiest among us need a nudge to get started. Psychologists have shown that physical movement can help the mind solve complex problems. So, what's the takeaway? The first step is always to get moving. Just like the mighty Eagle needs a push, you probably need a little kick in the butt to get out there and get going and move towards your dreams.
Setting a Deadline: The Power of Commitment
I share a story about my oldest daughter deciding to run the Chicago Marathon. My daughter epitomized dedication with training runs that began with short 4 - 5 mile runs and eventually grew to 18 and 21-mile runs - just to train and all because she set her mind to it. Commitment is powerful. If you’ve ever had a goal that you were determined to reach, and you wrapped a deadline around it, you’ve probably experienced the drive, the commitment, the dedication it takes to follow through on that goal,
The Standstill of Self-Doubt: Why People Don’t Pursue Their Dreams

Despite the fact that at the core of every human being is the need to grow and to evolve...self-doubt will keep you in a holding pattern. Recognizing self-doubt as the enemy is the first step towards overcoming it.
The Gap: Between Where You Are and Where You Want to Be
There is often a painful gap between where we are and where we desire to be. How do we bridge this gap? The answer lies in having a strong motive and a clear purpose. There are plenty of people who have all the necessary tools and training but no drive, and then there are those individuals who have little to no credentials but are filled with an unstoppable purpose. It’s the latter who often achieve amazing heights. These are the people that are playing full out. They’re giving it their all, giving it everything they got, because for them, there's no turning back, there's no alternative.
A Motivating Marathon: My Experience in Chicago
I had promised my daughter that I would run the last five miles of the marathon with her spurring her on. But then something crazy happened! Due to a city gridlock, I had no option but to run from mile eleven to mile twenty to meet my daughter. I’m not a marathon runner, I hadn’t trained and I didn't even have the right shoes. Still, I was driven by the promise I’d made to Brooke, so I just did it - I ran 18 miles. When you have a strong motive behind you, no matter what your goal is, you will find a way.
Harnessing Support: The Importance of Cheerleaders
The uplifting energy of thousands of marathon supporters propelled her forward. Sometimes, all we need is a cheerleader to help us push through our self-imposed limitations.
Closing the Gap and Finding Your Motive
You are capable of far more than you give yourself credit for. Dig deep, identify our motives, and take steps to close the gap between our current state and our dreams. If you're struggling to get started, she offers a success bundle and a challenge to help align your goals and actions.
Identify your motive, take action, and surround yourself with support. You have the potential to achieve great things. Don’t let self-doubt hold you back—sometimes, you only need a little push.
